FALL 2010 Alumni News:

11/29

Lucas Cotter, who moved after his sophomore year to Tennessee, had a great year at Tennessee Chattanooga.  He ran well and earned All-Conf and SOCON Freshman of the Year honors (he red shirted last year)!  You might get a kick out of the attached pic of Lucas.  He ran a local Turkey Trot and gave a nod to his “running roots” by sporting the NV colors!  He did us proud by finishing second, and the only guy to beat him was olympian Josh McAdams

Matt Wagoner recently appeared in a Naperville magazine blog for his work as a research scientist.  The article can be found here.  Matt was recently married (shown here with his wife).  Matt was one of our ‘founding fathers’ and was a top 7 runner on the 2000 team.

 11/19

Brian Morenus was recognized at the halftime of the Army-Airforce game for his academic achievements at West Point.  Brian is double majoring in history and economics.  He finished 148th in the Regional race and ran 32:55 for a 10k!  He was West Point’s 7th man.

Jimmy Riddle ran his best race of his college career at the Midwest Regional meet.  Jimmy was 17th overall in 30:22.  He was Illinois’ first man and this race earned him All-Midwest honors.   Wow, what a great way to end the year.  Jimmy came very close to qualifying for the NCAA championships as an individual.  Illinois finished a very respectable 5th.

Chris Derrick led his Stanford team to a 4th place finish at the NCAA meet in Terre Haute.  Chris was 5th overall, choosing to run in the chase pack most of the race to run with his teammates.  This was a better race out of Stanford than 2009, but Chris was still disappointed they were not on the trophy stand.  He and his Stanford teammates ran just hard enough to qualify out of their Regional meet.  Chris finished 7th overall.  When you go to their homepage, you can see Chris smiling and having a good time.

Danny Pawola was Penn State’s 4th man at the NCAA meet in 32:29.  Penn State finished 30th as a team.  He and his Penn State team qualified for the NCAA meet out of their Regional.  Danny was 42nd in 31:34 for the 10k and was Penn State’s 6th man in that meet.

Carlton Folster was UW Lacrosse’s 2nd man at the Midwest Regional and ran 25:05 for the 8k!  Wow, what an impressive season for a very dedicated young man.  Carlton has a great work ethic and a high level of integrity.  He has all the tools to be a great college runner.  I could not be more proud of a young man.

Luke Verbus ran 25:37 at altitude to place 8th in the Open race at their conference meet.  What a great performance for a freshman.   Western State is ranked #2 in the nation.

10/31

We had several alumni with impressive performances this past weekend at their conference meets:

Chris Derrick led his #1 ranked Stanford team to another conference title.   He and two teammates ran together the whole race to finish 1,2,3.   A second pack of three teammates finished 9,10, and 11 to close the door on #3 Oregon.

Jim Riddle was Illinois’ #1 finisher at the Big Ten meet in Madison.   He finished 20th overall in 24:17.  Check out the Illinois page that has his picture and the complete story.  What a stud!  Illinois finshed 6th as a team.  Danny Pawola also ran well to finish 34th overall and help his Penn State team to a 4th place finish.  Danny ran 24:35 and was not far behind Jimmy.   So proud!

Brian Morenus finished 36th overall and was West Point’s 7th man at their conference meet.  West Point finished 3rd as a team.

Carlton Folster was 4th man for UW Lacrosse in their conference meet.  He finished 26th in 26:09.  What a great performance from a true freshman!

David Wing was Miami of Ohio’s 7th man and placed 39th overall in his first conference meet.  We all know that David will continue to improve and it quite an accomplishment to step in as a freshman and run top 7 for a very good program.

Freshman Rob Sassa finished 31st out of 115 runners at their conference meet.  He ran 27:01.  Mt. Union won the team title and I am sure Rob will be a scorer for them in the years to come.

Ryan Perry ran 30:31 on a tough course to finish 57th in the NAC Chamionships.  His team, Concordia of Wisconsin, beat Aurora University for the title.

10/16

Chris Derrick finished first with two of his Stanford teammates (23:17) to lead them to the team title at the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute.   Stanford is ranked #1 in the country.  A full video of the race can be seen at www.flotrack.comJimmy Riddle also ran for Illinois at this meet.  He ran a respectable 24:56 to finish 102nd.

Marshall Stewart ran 30:08 at the Gene Marshall Invitational in Appleton, WI.   He then ran 29:38 at a huge invitational at UW Oshkosh.   Marshall continues to do well in xc although he is a 400m/800m runner in the spring for Carthage College.  Ryan Bertram ran 28:38 and RJ McNichols continued to be a travel team member of North Central and ran 26:37!  All of these guys never ran top 7 for us but have had great college careers.  It goes to show that if you choose the right school, running competitively can continue.

Brian Morenus was West Point’s 6th man in their dual loss vs. Navy.  He ran 26:51.

Danny Pawola had an off day, running 26:56 and finished 98th in an invitational hosted by Penn State.  Hopefully, he can turn it around in time for the Big Ten meet if he gets a chance to run there.

Carlton Folster was UW Lacrosse’s 9th man in an invitational where he ran 25:58.   UW Lacrosse finished 3rd as a team.

David Wing was Miami of Ohio’s 6th man in 25:43 at the Falcon Invitational.  David is having a very good freshman season and making an impact right away.

10/1

Brian Morenus was Army’s 5th man at a huge invitational (Paul Short Run) out East.  He ran a very respectable 26:05 for the 8k course.

Freshman Carlton Folster ran his first race of the year for UW Lacrosse and was their 7th man and finished 19th overall in a meet with over 300 finishers!  Wow, what a great start to a college career!!!

Sophomore Danny Pawola continued to run well and was Penn State’s 3rd man at the Notre Dame Invitational running a personal best 24:53.

Junior Ryan Perry had his best race of the year and ‘stepped up’ according to his coach to be Concordia’s 5th man and place 29th overall to anchor his team to a 2nd place finish.

Freshman Billy Klimczak ran 27:31 in the Open race at Notre Dame placing 31st.

Jim Riddle was Illinois’ 4th man at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational while running a 24:42.

Chris Derrick has a Q & A on the Running Times site.

Luke Verbus ran a very respectable 27:38 at the Colorado Shootout Invitational and was Western State’s 2nd redshirt finisher.

RJ McNichols (North Central) and Marshall Stewart (Carthage College) were 5th and 45th in the Open race at the Carthage Invitational.  What a great performance from RJ!!!  He ran 27:37 on a tough course.

Jaffar Mahmoud ran a very respectable 27:04 for Drake University at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in rainy and windy conditions.

Freshman David Wing (Miami of Ohio) ran 26:01 in the Ohio Intercollegiate meet in the Open race.  He was 7th overall and would have placed 37th in the varsity race.  He was not real pleased with his result, but it was a solid race that he knows he can improve upon.  Freshman Rob Sassa (Mt. Union) also ran in this race placing 83rd in 27:47.

9/25

Chris Derrick ran his first race of the year at the Stanford Invitational.  He ran with his teammates and they finished 2,3,4.   Chris ran 23:14 over the 8k course and #1 ranked Stanford won the meet.  You gotta love the facial hair.  Also, you can watch him here in a video about the Stanford long run.

Danny Pawola was Penn State’s 4th man again at the Roy Griak Invitational.  Danny is starting to show consistency with his races and only good things come down the road once you start running well on a regular basis.

Ryan Bertram continues to run well at Augustana.  He ran 28:03 at an invitational in Rock Island.   It is great to see him running in college and doing so well.

 9/18

Sophomore Brian Morenus ran as Army’s 5th man at a meet hosted by Iona.   He spoke with Brian Chenoweth (Geneseo, and now Harvard) at the meet.

Aaron Beattie was Washington’s 10th man at a meet they hosted.   He called me and said he is red-shirting this fall.  I believe he said he ran 24:50.

I spoke with Chris Derrick (Stanford) last weekend.  Chris said he ran his first-ever 100 mile week but was reduced to a 65 mile week last week because he turned his ankle again.  We blame it all on current senior Hirsh Gaikwad :)   He was also interviewed on Flotrak this past week and we got an insight into the NCAA’s last year.

Jimmy Riddle (Jr.) was 5th overall at the Illinois Intercollegiates!!!  Wow, what a debut from a year of frustrating injuries.   Jimmy out-kicked current NV assistant Kyle Brady, a former national champion from North Central, down the stretch.  Mike Spain, who was a speaker with Kyle at our Oregon camp, was the overall champion.   Mike runs for North Central.

In the Intercollegiate Open race, we had four guys run.  Jordan Lagomarcino (Illinois), RJ McNichols (North Central), Ryan Bertram (Augustana), and Bryan Winek (Illinois State) finished 9th, 15th, 27th, and 33rd respectively.   What a great race for these guys.  Can you believe Ryan Bertram?  I could not be more proud!  RJ is simply one of the hardest working athletes out there and Lago continues to impress.  I told Coach McRaven he was worth the investment and it looks like he is returning dividends :)

Sophomore Danny Pawola was their 5th man at an invite last weekend.  He did not run as well as the weekend before but he is starting to show some consistency.

Ryan Perry (Junior) was 54th overall at last weekend’s Midwest Classic Invitational.  He now runs for Concordia College in Wisconsin.  Marshall Stewart (Carthage, Jr.) was 84th in this same race.

Luke Verbus (frosh at Western State College in Colorado) had a tough first race but is running well overall.   Western State has been the runner-up at the Division II level at the NCAA championships the last two years.

David Wing (Fr.) ran just under 26:00 for an 8k and finished 44th overall for Miami of Ohio at an invitational at Eastern Michigan.  David is running very well and loves the school and his teammates.

Freshman Billy Klimcak (Butler) was 104th at the Indiana Intercollegiates.  I know that Billy is dealing with a lot right now and our prayers and thoughts go out to him and his family.

Another Freshman, Jaffar Mahmoud (Drake) was their 12th man at an invite on the 10th.  He ran the 6k course in 20:35.9.

Rob Sassa (Mount Union) was their 9th man at the Behrends Invitational.  He ran 28:28 to place 25th overall.  Great start to his season!!!

9/04/10

Freshman Jordan Lagomarcino finished 16th at the Illini Classic in his debut race as an Illini.  Junior Jim Riddle, also on the Illinois team, was held out for precautionary reasons.  Riddle is on the cover of the poster for the Illini!  He is the runner on the bottom right corner.  Freshman Billy Klimczak, who runs for Butler University, had a tough debut.  He was well behind Lagomarcino in 49th.

Freshman David Wing had a great first race for Miami of Ohio.  He was one of the top 7 runners and finished strong just like he did in high school.  He was 15th overall!

Freshman Carlton Folster placed 5th in his intra-squad meet at UW-La Crosse and made the team’s 24-man roster!

Drake University freshman, Jaffar Mahmoud, was 28th in his first race for the Bulldogs.  Like Klimczak, this was not a great start, but knowing Jaffar, he will rebound.

Freshman Luke Verbus, now at Western State College in Colorado, ran with the lead pack in a time trial last Friday.  He and the other freshman ran 6k while the varsity ran an 8k.

Junior Chris Derrick is living the dream while at camp at Mammoth Lakes with his Stanford teammates.  I talked to Aaron Beattie, a freshman at The University of Washington, and he is also living the dream while training with his teammates.  The whole team went to a Dave Matthews concert on Saturday, Sept. 4th.  Both of these guys do not start school until mid/late September.

Junior Kyle Perry is now at Concordia College in Wisconsin.  He is running cross country and is a pharmacy major there.

A quote from the Penn State website says,  “As the Lion’s number three man, sophomore Danny Pawola (Naperville, Ill.) picked off several Lock Haven athletes in the closing meters to cross fourth overall in 18:25.”  A great start for Danny!!

Marshall Stewart, now a junior at Carthage College in Wisconsin, will make his debut next weekend.

Calling All Alumni!

We need your help! You may have noticed that in recent weeks, the website has undergone some pretty extensive re-organization efforts. As updates continue, we’re looking to keep a record of how our alumni fared in their collegiate careers. This might be a cool page for future young men in our program to follow, too. If you’re an alum who competed or is currently competing in college, click on the link below for your graduating class. Email any information you’d like added to your bio to steve_saul@ipsd.org. Be sure to include a picture or a link to one for your bio if there isn’t one already posted! Thanks!
