Updated October 26, 2008 2008 Cross Country ……….. October 31/November 1, 2008: Chris Derrick ran another great race to finish 3rd overall at the Pac-10 meet
in Eugene, Oregon. I was told there
were 5,000 people watching this race. I
texted Chris to congratulate him
and his response was, ‘thanks, but the team did not win so I am not happy’. Stanford is ranked 2nd in the country and
Oregon is ranked first. Cross country
is a TEAM sport and Chris fully
understands this and I am sure he and his teammates will be ready to go for
the Regional meet in two weeks and the NCAA’s 9 days after that. RJ McNichols, Marshall Stewart, Joe
Murphy, Andrew Dunham, and Ryan
Bertram all ran in the CCIW meet on Saturday. Andrew
ran in the varsity race
and the other four ran in the Open race. Marshall
ran a great race (57th overall) and is starting to excel at cross
country. Dan Murphy ran in the Iowa Conference Championships to help his Loras team to second place. Jim
Riddle is experiencing some IT band issues and won’t be running in the
Big Ten meet. He is expected to run in
the upcoming Regional meet in two weeks.
I recently saw Steve Arves
and he filled me in on his season.
Steve is skinny as ever and is working hard. Look for him to continue to improve. Here is a recap of his season: St. Olaf Invitational- 139th in
31:03; UW-Eau Claire Blugold Meet- 227th in 29:18; Jew Drew’s Invitational-
318th in 29:32 October 24th/25th, 2008: Some things never change as two guys from last year’s
national championship team, Kevin
Grady and Josh Budnik, finished
right behind one another at the Illini Invitational. Eric Olen ran
possibly the best race of his career at their conference meet while running
26:58 and dropping almost 40 seconds off his previous best. He was Ithaca’s 9th man and earned
all-conference honors. James Nuxoll (28:24)and Ryan Miller (29:42) ran at the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational. October 18th, 2008:
Freshman Chris Derrick ran in his second college race at the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute.
He was 4th overall in 23:37! He
was the second man for Stanford which won the team title in the White
Division. Stanford is ranked 10th in
the country, but with this victory, they should move up in the rankings. If you have not had the chance, be sure to
read his blog. Jimmy
Riddle did not run for Illinois in this meet due to an IT issue. Kevin
Grady ran in familiar territory at the Bradley Classic in Peoria this past weekend. He did not have the greatest race but he is
learning the ins and outs of college running. Andrew
Dunham ran 28:31 at the Osh Kosh Brooks Invitational. Dan Murphy ran 28:44 at the Loras Invitational to finish 32nd overall.
October 4-11, 2008:
Freshman Kevin Grady did not have a very good race (27:01) in the loaded Notre Dame Invitational on October 3rd. However, as usual, we will see him bounce back and do
great things. Brian Rooney ran 29:14 at the Border War Invitational in Edwardsville on October 11th. Eric
Olen ran 28:00 on a slow course at the Hamilton Invitational on October 11th.
RJ McNichols ran a 27:35 at
the Carthage Invitational on October 3 and turned around and ran 28:16 on a
slower course at the Benedictine Invitational on the 10th!
Freshman Marshall Stewart
ran 30:33 at the Carthage Invitational.
Mike Ruff is still
hurt. Joe Murphy ran 29:13 at the Dan Huston invite in Waverly, Iowa on the 11th. His brother, Dan Murphy, ran 28:26 at the Division III pre-national meet at Hanover College.
Andrew Dunham ran 30:12 at
the UW-Parkside Invitational on October 11th.
Andrew runs for Elmhurst College.
Their coach, Jim Akita, was one of the top Americans in the Chicago
Marathon held on the 12th. September 26th/27th, 2008: Wow,
what a great weekend for our alumni!
Freshman Chris Derrick ran
his first race in a Stanford jersey and was #1 for their team and finished
3rd overall (24:18) at the Stanford Invitational! Most don’t
know, and Chris would never use anything as an excuse, but he was out for
another week with a virus and had only had 11 days of training before this
meet. I had two people ask me if he
was really human this past weekend J
Freshman Jim Riddle leads his Illinois
teammates in a recent race Freshman Jim Riddle ran an awesome race at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational. He was 6th
overall and was Illinois’ first man! Wow!!!
Junior Eric Olen ran in the
Houghton Highlander Invitational and ran 27:42 for the 8k to finish 13th overall. It was a NV reunion at the Lundeen-Brissman
Invitational at Augustana
College in Davenport! Junior Dan Murphy (27:44) got off to a great
start as he battled Junior Brian
Rooney (27:52) for NV supremacy at this meet. Brian has worked his tail end off and was
Washington University’s 7th man at this meet!! Other guys you will find in the results
are: Joe Murphy (29:01); Ryan
Miller (29:33); Jim Nuxoll (29:34);
Andrew Dunham (29:50); and Ryan Bertram (31:45). September 19th/20th, 2008: The
Illinois Intercollegiate meet (results) was hosted by Illinois State on Friday night and we had
great representation. Freshman Jimmy Riddle ran a strong race to
finish 12th overall in 25:17 for the 8k race.
He was Illinois’ 4th man.
Freshman Kevin Grady
continued to surprise many as he was ISU’s 8th man in 26:34. Kevin is a walk-on at ISU, so, to be their
8th man as a freshman is an incredible achievement. Freshman Ryan Perry continues to impress too. He ran 29:11 as COD’s 3rd man. Junior Andrew
Dunham is showing that he is rounding back into shape. He ran 30:21 for the Elmhurst College
team. Senior Ryan Miller ran 30:44 and his Junior teammate, James Nuxoll, ran 29:47. Freshman Ryan Bertram ran his debut race for Augustana at this meet and
ran 30:24. Freshman Marshall Stewart had his debut for
Carthage College by running in the Concordia Invitational in 33:19. No
word on where Mike Ruff
was…..??? RJ?? Joe Murphy?? Loras site is
down – any word on Dan Murphy? September 12th/13th, 2008: Junior Eric Olen
improved upon his 4 mile time from two weeks ago to run 21:09 on the Oneonta,
New York course. ‘Oneonta’ is an
Indian word for ‘hills’. Results. Junior Brian
Rooney ran 30:28 for an 8k in Grinnell, Iowa. Former teammate Dan Murphy ran 29:06 at the
same meet as a member of the Loras College team. Results. Junior James
Nuxoll ran 31:09.7 for an 8k in Bowling Green, KY. Teammate Ryan Miller was right behind him in 31:17.9. Results. Last but not least, we got to see Freshman Ryan Perry run in the Bradley Open at
Detweiller Park on Friday night. The
course was soggy from the rain but Ryan ran a respectable 29:54 for the
8k. Results. August 29th, 2008: Freshmen Jim Riddle and Kevin Grady
ran in the Early Bird Illini Classic for their first race. Jim was 2nd overall for the 6k running 5:02
pace! Kevin also ran very well
finishing as ISU’s 5th man! Results
found here and here.
Freshman Kevin Grady at the Illini
Early Bird Classic
Jimmy Riddle runs next to freshman
teammate Nathan Troester (LWE) in the Illini Early Bird Classic. Junior Brian Rooney ran 21:50 for a 6k and set a new personal record at
the Big River Early Bird Invitational.
Results. Freshman Ryan Perry ran 21:56 for the 4 mile race. He was College of Dupage’s 3rd man. Results. Junior Eric Olen ran a 17:06 in the Ithaca College alumni 5k race. Results. Freshman Ryan Bertram ran 24:46 for a 4 mile intra squad race at Augustana
College in Rock Island. 2008 Track and Field………..
